A New Chapter Begins: Introducing Psych Perspectives
July, for me, has always been a favorite month. Beyond the warm weather and sunshine, it also happens that my birthday falls in July, and I do love birthdays! This year July has even greater significance. It marks the opening of Psych Perspectives!
About 8 months ago my long-time partner, mentor, and colleague, Dr. Paula Christian-Kliger, came to me to say she would be keeping her Psych Assets practice location in New York but wished to entrust it’s Michigan based client care to me.
Opportunities like this do not come around very often in life. I am excited, grateful and a little nervous to begin this new journey. The talented therapists and psychiatrist who’ve been working together for years all agreed to join with me, offering an opportunity for a seamlessness transition for our clients. We are already in an amazing location so staying in our office suite further helps everyone adapt to the change. I saw this as another way to assure any transitions will be seen as a subtle improvement and not a radical departure.
As I began to write this inaugural blog for Psych Perspectives, I reflected on the fact that we often seek to have our lives stay constant. However, this type of thinking sometimes may actually impede us in our growth path. As a personal example, opening a new business after a successful career can be nerve wracking, but also invigorating.
Think about this in your own life … the right person at the right time, the right job at the right moment, the right way suddenly appearing! My feeling is we sometimes spend too much time wanting things to wrapped with a bow and lose the opportunity to see where a more daring path will take us.
The fears take over as the “what-ifs” multiply and, if we allow it, anxiety can put a stop to positive change. This comes up so much in my work with clients suffering with anxiety. A major part of life is experiencing failure, setbacks and transitions. These events allow us to experience the most important side of life… resilience.
Without new experiences we end up avoiding the unknown, living in fear of the wrong choices, and ultimately losing opportunities.
So… I share this with you today to say Psych Perspectives is here! I could not be more nervous, excited, hopeful and grateful to build with a talented group of professionals and create great things for our clients and ourselves.
